The corner

Well, I think we have turned the corner. Mason's blood pressure has stabilized and they have been able to wean the dopamine from the highest dose (20) to 7.5. Last night his kidneys started working again and he began to pee and his blood pressure was stable enough that they started giving him some lasix to help him get rid of some of the extra fluid. He is very swollen and is carrying over a pound of extra weight. His blood work this morning showed nothing of concern so no transfusions as of yet. In the past 48 hours he has received 2 blood transfusions, 4 platelet transfusions, 2 albumins, and 2 bolus to help him. So far nothing has grown out in the cultures but if it is bacterial they really don't expect it to since he was on antibiotics previously.

Please continue to pray. The nurse yesterday told us that is he does make it through this that he will likely have no quality of life. Again the odds are stacked against him with the brain bleeds and now meningitis. But we don't believe in odds. And if it is God's plan, I pray that Mason will be completely healed. Please join me in continuing to pray for healing and full recovery for our boy.

Psalm 103:2-3
Praise the Lord, O my soul and forget not all his benefits. Who forgives all your sins. And heals all your diseases.

  2. Hi, I've been reading your blog for a while now. We had a 25 weeker who spent 4 months in the NICU so we know the roller coaster! I just wanted to share this other blog with you. Her little guy also had brain bleeds and is now 3 years old!

  3. I remember them telling us the same thing with Bella. You have the right attitude. We decided that as long as she was fighting we would too. We also told God we would accept whatever path he had for her. That doesn't mean that I don't stress and cry and still pray for the best outcome. I just have faith that He is in charge.

our little one had bilateral grade 4 ivh with spillage onto her brain. Our blog is isabellegraceprice.blogspot.com if you want more info on our little miracle. Sending you prayers!

  4. This is not a path I would choose for anyone as we traveled here 22 years ago. We were told so many things about the future of our little boy that did not come true. Some did. But I never really understood how other people could make statements about Alex's quality of life. His life is not the same as his highly educated athletic older sibs but his own life is filled with love, purpose, choice, and he and I just returned from a vacation with his brother, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and he loved every minute of it. Keep praying, believing, and living each day.
I found your blog because Emily Rampey Miller is my daughter-in-law. She is just one of your family's prayer warriors and I have joined the ranks. God be with each of you today.

  5. I am inspired just reading the comments here from those of you whose children defied "the odds." Lauren and Josh, I agree with Becky--your little Mason clearly has an incredibly strong will to live and is doing everything he can to make that happen, with the help of the doctors and all of the amazing love surrounding him. I hope all that love is lifting you up, too, and helping to provide you strength through this long, dark night. as one of my favorite songs goes, The darkest hour is just before the dawn.... Hugs to you!

  7. Lauren, We don't believe in odds either. Our God is great and greater than any other. He will decide about Mason's 'quality of life'. He measures quality far different than doctors and nurses. Praying with and for you... The Downings

  8. Mason is definetly in our thoughts and prayers! If it is ok with you and your family, I would like to add Mason to our church's prayer list? All things are possible through Him and God will take care of Mason! He is such a beautiful child! God Bless you all!
